The SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity – formerly known as the Powerhouse Science Center – is an adaptive reuse of the historic 1912-era PG&E Power Station, which sat vacant on the banks of the Sacramento River for 60 years. Before becoming the region’s newest hub for science education and exploration, the historic structure had to undergo stabilization and rehabilitation. The building received a complete structural retrofit and a second floor for flexible exhibit space. A new two-story, 22,000SF addition was built on the east side of the existing building and contains an entry lobby, classrooms, offices, a café and a 110-seat planetarium prominently on display with a zinc-clad hemispheric dome rising above the building’s mass.

Stanislaus State Vasche Library Renovation

Project Details
Location: Turlock, CA
Square Feet: 133,077
Delivery: Collaborative Design-Build
Categories: Education, Renovations
Project Description
This Collaborative Design-Build partnership between Otto Construction, EHDD Architects and CSU Stanislaus brought the 3-story 1960s era building into the 21st century. Now fully renovated, the 133,077SF library can accommodate 1,000 people at a time and house Stan State’s collection of over 675,000 items thanks to a new state-of-the-art Electronic Compact Book Storage System. Previously, the same collection took up over 30,000SF of space on multiple floors, but now only requires 16,977SF. This feature left more space in the renovated library for new amenities. Extensive technology resources, including distributed computers, laptop check out, tech help desk, and multimedia group study rooms, give students a wide variety of spaces and technologies to meet their needs. Additional amenities include 24-hour study areas, a café, group study spaces and quiet zones with a variety of seating options. New openings in the second floor allow daylight to filter down to the first floor from new clerestory windows.
The first phase of the project consisted of the installation of 32 trailers to serve as a temporary home for library services. This made room for the library to be vacated before construction began.

Amenity improvements included a renovated community center, administration office, laundry facility, a new basketball half-court, outdoor gathering areas and furnishings, and community garden.
