Marzen Building Renovation

Marzen Building Renovation

Project Details

Location: Sacramento, CA

Square Feet: 3,500

Delivery: Design-Assist

Categories: Renovations, In Your Community

The historic 2-story, 3,500SF 1930’s Marzen Building is located on the Sacramento Children’s Home campus. Since 1867, the Sacramento Children’s Home has been committed to helping children by providing high-quality care to the Sacramento region’s most vulnerable children and families.

The main focus of the renovation centered around retaining the external envelope, material, and details (brick and wood-framed windows) as well as the majority of interior partition walls, and historic wood staircase. The goal was for a more modern and up-to-date building with private offices and meeting spaces. Upgrades were necessary to address accessibility, acoustics, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems of the building. Abatement of lead paint and ceramic tiles, and asbestos linoleum was required.

Location: Sacramento, CA

Square Feet: 48,940

Delivery: Design-Build

Categories: Renovations, In Your Community

The SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity – formerly known as the Powerhouse Science Center – is an adaptive reuse of the historic 1912-era PG&E Power Station, which sat vacant on the banks of the Sacramento River for 60 years. Before becoming the region’s newest hub for science education and exploration, the historic structure had to undergo stabilization and  rehabilitation. The building received a complete structural retrofit and a second floor for flexible exhibit space. A new two-story, 22,000SF addition was built on the east side of the existing building and contains an entry lobby, classrooms, offices, a café and a 110-seat planetarium prominently on display with a zinc-clad hemispheric dome rising above the building’s mass.
